OBJECTIVE:  IÕm seeking a position as a photojournalist or photography editor with a proven NY news organization.  IÕm open to types of employment: 2-3 regular shifts per week in a long-term freelance contract or full-time salaried employment.

SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS: IÕm a seasoned professional with extensive experience in photography, journalism, photo editing, communications, teaching, and qualitative field research.   I work well with teams as a leader or participant, and am equally strong at self-managing and working independently.  I have excellent communication skills, work well under pressure, and treat problems as opportunities.

SKILLS:  I have 20 years experience working as a photographer and am skilled in commercial photography, portraiture, architectural and real estate photography, as well as photojournalism, ethnographic photography, fine-art and travel photography.  I have very strong editing skills, and can recognize the difference between a compelling image and mediocre image.  I understand the nuances and responsibilities of anchoring image to text and ensuring the congruency between the message that is intended and received. I have extensive experience with journalistic reporting, key-informant interviews, academic and literary research.  I possess excellent written and verbal communication and negotiation skills and am confident and efficacious with cross-cultural and inter-generational interactions.  Strong leadership skills and honed abilities in facilitating group process and classroom instruction.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE:

 

San Anto Cultural Arts    7- 2009

Taught photojournalism to a group of 10 students for the El Placazo Newspaper with a focus on using photography to explore poverty and socio-cultural identity.  The class culminated in an exhibit at Citibank in San Antonio, Texas.

Unseen America          2-2005 / 6-2005

Taught photography, writing, and critical thinking to 25 ten year-olds at Public School 152 in Queens, NY. Each of my students were immigrants themselves, or born to immigrant families, from India, China, Bangladesh, Columbia, Malaysia, Peru, Dominican Republic, Spain, Egypt and Greece. I asked my students to consider concepts of tradition, culture, identity, environment, and family and represent those ideas with pictures and words. The class culminated in an exhibition at the Service Employees International Union gallery.

Chicano Now: An American Experience     5-2002


Contributed a set of photos to a five-year traveling exhibit, which visited the Smithsonian, representing contemporary expressions of Chicano life, music, dance, politics, and celebration.
